I am analysing Michael Jackson as my star profile.

Michael Jackson was born in Gary, Indiana, on August 29, 1958, he was one of the most famous people to walk the planet, he was named ‘The King of Pop’. Michael’s father encouraged him to get into music from a young age and Michael and four of his brothers created a group named the ‘The Jackson Five’. Michael's singing and dancing talents were amazingly mature, and he became the main voice and focus of ‘The Jackson 5’. The Jackson five became one of the most popular bands of the 1970’, and was one of the most successful groups in music history.

Michael went solo and became a major success, by the 1980’s, he had become more popular than his brothers. He had the biggest-selling album of all time, which was "Thriller" in 1982. He started in films such as ‘the Scarecrow in The Wiz’ which was made in 1978, but he got more popularity from his music videos.

In the 1990s Michael became child-like and withdrawn. He began to change his physical appearance drastically, and his behaviour became peculiar, he was a consistent target for scandals. He had two short marriages and had two children by his second wife, but people feel that the reason for him having children was image-oriented. Michael Jackson's continued to be one of the most famous and inspirational people on the planet even with all the problems of his seriously troubled adult life.

The King of Pop sadly died on June 25, 2009, aged 50 .It was a sudden death due to a drug-induced cardiac arrest, it happened just as he was coming out of a four-years of being isolated from the public. He was in the middle of  rehearsing his sell-out London concert "comeback" which was supposed to be in July of 2009, it was a tragic loss for the world and all of his fans. Millions of Michael’s devoted fans will remember where they were "the day Michael died". Michael Jackson works in the Pop music genre.

Michael Jackson’s star image was established in the earliest videos as he was the main focus of the Jackson Fives videos and as he was so young but had such a powerful voice he became famous and went onto be a solo artist and one of the most famous people on the planet. The early image of Michael Jackson in the Jackson five’s song ABC was of a young boy who managed to win over the hearts of the world even coming from a coloured family.

The image of his powerful voice winning the hearts of the world carried on into the rest of his career. He became one of the most famous people on the planet. He changed the style of the music world for good. He was always the main focus in all his videos and he made sure everyone was looking at him.

In most of Michael Jackson’s videos he is shown as playing a character in his videos. In ‘Thriller’ it is a 10 minute long video and the start of the video shows him at the cinema with his girlfriend then it gets into the music. In ‘Bad’ he is shown as being a member of a gang fighting with another gang.

In his videos is always shown as performing and he sings all his songs and doesn’t have parts where the song is playing but he is not singing along to it. He sings all the words and performs in his videos really well. He is always the main focus of the videos so you can tell he is singing as the camera is focused on him.

There are lots of close ups of Michael in all of his videos. He is always the main focus, his outfits are always bolder than the other peoples in the videos so that he stands out, for example in ‘Thriller’ he is wearing a red jacket while the other zombies are wearing darker colour clothes. In ‘Smooth Criminal’ he is wearing a white suit while the other people are wearing black. The lights are always shining on him, and although mainly all the shots are close ups on his face, especially in earlier videos, there are longer shots which still have him as the main focus.

 Michael Jackson’s record company attempts to sell their star by naming him the King of Pop which makes people want to listen to him, they have also told him to sing songs that match his voice but are up to date with the type of music the world was listening to at the time he was most famous. They have also had him sing songs that have deep meaning in them like ‘heal the world’.

The hairstyles that Michael Jackson had were the same for all the years where he was at his most famous. Michael Jackson had a lot of costumes in his music videos and they are always bold and stand out from the other people in the video. In ‘Bad’ his outfit is more extravagant than the other people in the videos, in ‘Thriller’ his outfit Is bright red while the other people have more duller outfits on so the focus is always on Michael. In ‘Smooth criminal’ he has got a white suit on which stands out from the other people who have black suits on. There aren’t many props in his videos as he mainly uses dance scenes as Michael Jackson is well known for his dancing. The settings of all of his videos links into the lyrics of the song, in ‘Thriller’ he is by a graveyard, in ‘Smooth criminal’ the setting looks like the old speak easies from America in the 1920’s when gangs were around.

In Michael Jackson’s videos he has used camera work to help make sure that he is the main focus of all his videos as he is a solo artist and he wants the focus to be on him as it is his videos. Editing has been use so he stands out more, lighting has been on him to make him appear more bolder than other characters in the video. In ‘Thriller’ the area they are in is dark but Michael has a red jacket on and due to lighting his jacket stands out more than the other people in the videos outfits. The outfit Michael chooses are always bolder and more extravagant that other peoples like in ‘bad’ he has clothes that are more studded than other peoples.

The wider cultural significance of the star is that he is a man who came from a coloured family, was in a group with his family, went on to be a solo artist and become the ‘King of Pop’ and also one of the most widely known men in the world.

Michael Jackson has developed as a star due to being part of a famous band then going solo due to him having the most powerful voice in the group and becoming the ‘King of Pop’. He was worldwide famous and his songs touched millions of people. Even after he disappeared from the public spotlight when he announced his comeback tour it was a sell out concert within minutes of the tickets going on sale. He sadly died before he could perform the concert. Millions of people around the world mourned his death and remembered where they were the day Michael Jackson died.
